  1. First off, you really shouldn't turn your filter off unless you're cleaning the tank.

When you clean the foam of the filter, make sure you clean it in a bowl with old tank water, so you don't kill off the beneficial bacteria, and don't keep it out of water too long.

  2. if your filter has a carbon filter separate than the foam or ammonia-- carbon should always be changed every 2 week if gold fish are present. if not  one filter, one month.

i have a 55 gal, with 2 waterfalls. i must change every two weeks, due to the amount of fish ,and their size.

never turn off your filter, it has a one-way motion that traPS bad  matter, you stopping it, it can backwash  into the tank.

you will learn how dirty your fish are just by learning your filters, stay with one brand, and check them. learn how long u as a fish owner can keep your fish happy on the same brand.

ps. foam is for buffing your tank, its what keeps it looking clear. carbon is for the smell, ammonia is ,of course for control of ammonia

  3. Is it a internal or External filter ?

I ask this because 1500lt/h is very power full filter a internal.

But by the way in case of internal filter fishes are sometime try eat the dirty foam.

It has no any limit but twice in 15 days. It also depand on your fish If the foam become more dirty then you have to clean it more frequently and if it is clean you can change it when when it looks dirty. But it recommandes to care internal filter more than external filter.
