  1. If you want something other than the traditional tropical small community tank, a 29 gallon tank is perfect for a breeding pair of Convict cichlids.

Convicts are great smaller semi-aggressive fish. They can be very territorial when in breeding mode. They have a wonderful personality and keep your tank lively.

If interested, check out the link in the sources section. It is a great resource that I found when I first started keeping convicts.

  2. two fancy goldfish.

i love goldfish, people always have the steriotypical idea of what a gold fish is, but if you google some pictures of fancy goldfish you may be surprised by how large they will grow in a medium tank like yours.

  3. Right here is what I think. 6 to 8 danios, 6 to 8 neon tetras, 2 corydoras, 1 or 2 plecos, if you want you can also add guppies or platies.

  4. For a 29 Gallon.

Zebra Danios are great and stay mostly top to mid tank.  Cory Cats stay mostly at the bottom.  And for the middle is a matter of preference and taste.

If you get some Zebra Danios...go with bout 5.  They are schooling fish and 5 is a good number.  Same with the Cory Cats.  You dont want to have less than 3 with this type of fish due to the fact they are very social....5 is a good number also.

As far as a Pleco...you could do one pleco in a 29 Gallon, but beware these fish can grow to about 18 inches and could out grow your tank.  I had one in a 29, before I realized when I upgraded to a 55 Gallon...it was better for him there...he is now 13 inches and still growing.  As far as 2 Pleco...stick to one...it is possible with 2 pleco you could have a little fight on your hands...usually they are very peaceful, but could become aggressive to same species...especially with the tank size you have and on hiding spaces.  You might want to consider a Dwarf Pleco.  These guys dont get nearly as big and do the same job as a bottom feeder.

As for the rest of the tank...Tiger Barbs are great but 5 is a good number.  They are fin nippers for longer finned fish...and are considered Semi-Aggressive...havent had a problem with mine.

I would also consider one Dwarf Gourami and a school of tetra.  There are so many to choose from...the possibilities are endless.  Maybe a group of Redeye Tetra or Headlight/tail light Tetra.  Even maybe a group of Black skirt Tetra. (they also have the "fruit" skirt tetras...in colores of pink or blue).  The Skirt Tetra (Black, pink, blue) are also considered a bit semi aggressive so beware of long finned fish with these guys.

I have a school of 6 Blackskirt Tetra and they school with my Tiger Barbs...I have had no issues with them either.

    So to recap...

5 Zebra Danio (I prefer the short finned ones)

5 Cory Cats (lots of variety..stick to one type...lI lke the Albino and Green)

1 Dwarf Gourami (Neon Blue or Flame)

    1 Dwarf Pleco

5 Redeye Tetra or a schooling fish of some sort.  Something that would be nice is 5-10 Neons instead of the redeyes...they look great and add a lot of color. They are also safe with the cory cats, danios, dwarf Gourami, dwarf Pleco.

Add lots of plant cover for the fish and a log or cave for the cories and dwarf pleco.

You have a lot of possibliities so have fun with it.

  5. Tiger bards are hardy fish need three or more. Tetras come in all kinds of colors and sizes.

  6. Goldfish...

    Fighting fish...

    Gourami...
