The boat is a 1998 SeaRay 180BR. I can shift into drive OK, but it will not go back into neutral easily. It will eventually go into neutral, but I usually have to through it into reverse or kill then engine to stay out of trouble.

  1. I had the same problem with the same engine.  It was the Shift Assist or Interrupter switch. If you physically push in the switch with a screwdriver while the engine is running and it doesn't start to stall the engine it's bad.  Also if you take the two wires coming from the engine to the switch and connect them together it should stall.  It's a pretty easy repair and the switch costs about $40.00.  Would definitely check this before you start
    replacing cables.
