I have 2 Greek spur thighed tortoises one male and one female both are 3 years old. The female is very aggressive and keeps biting the male tortise as well as myself and my dog. Does anyone know what i should do to try and stop this behaviour as i am afraid she will really hurt the other tortoise. They have been together for about a year and the aggression has started in the last few months there was none before.

  1. give it a timeout and make it sit and face the corner of a room

  2. If you have several tortoises, it is advisable to separate the males and females as the males often engage in female shell-butting and leg biting as part of their courtship.  Females constantly exposed to this treatment and unable to escape will feed less, produce eggs less frequently and will eventually suffer from extensive shell and leg damage with an increased likelihood of infections.

So all in all, best to separate them. If you are trying to breed them then separate them as soon as the deed is done because it sounds like stress is making your female tortoise agressive.

  3. Tortoises rarely 'hang out' in the wild, and they generally get stressed when forced to live in too small of an area they have to share.

The male has decided that the small space he has is his- and is defending it against intrusion. As they get bigger, this becomes more of a problem, and becoming sexually mature amplifies it more.
