I used the analog input in the back, tried switching the sound to variable, but no sound comes out from the speakers. They are connected and working, but no signal comes from the tv.

  1. Can you connect the receiver you are using directly to the cable box? Just run the red/white rca cords out from the cable box and into the external receiver. Usually on HD tvs the only sound output is from it's optical out, and that will be stereo only, but it will work.  The analog slots in the tv are usually only Inputs.

If you don't have a cable box, and just want tv sound output to your external speakers, first connect the red/white rca's into the tv and then get the optical cable I mentioned above and run it from the tv to the receiver.

Really need to know what you are connecting into the tv for your source for best answer.
