  1. 2"/12"=   .01667 ft.

    .01667 ft.  x 400 ft2 = 66.66 ft3  (cubic feet)

    66.66 ft3/27= 2.469  cu yards

Therefore, you order 2.5 yards or just make it an even 3 yards.

  2. Just go to where you are planning on buying your gravel.  Tell them the size of the area and how deep you want the gravel, they will figure it out for you.

  3. Geometry tells us that you'll need about 2.5 yards of material to fill the space. But that gets tricky with gravel because it's usually sold in tons not yards (at least in this area).

So if you have to buy the gravel by the ton, you'll want about 3.5 tons. (this is based on a standard density of dry gravel).

The retailer who sells you this gravel should have a coverage chart. Check to see if I'm close.

  4. Usually about 1 cubic yard per 1/2 inch over 500 square feet.

5 yards will cover the 400 sq ft area to a depth of 2 inches.

  5. approx 133.33 yards

  6. 400 X .083 =33.20 cubic ft  for 1" thick

    33.20 X 2 = 66.40 cubic ft for 2" thick

66.40 divided by 27 cubic ft (cubic yd) = 2.46 cubic yd.
