When you try to kickstart something while it's in gear, you're not only forcing the piston up and down, but also forcing the crankshaft against the clutch (even though it's disengaged). It's going to take a lot more effort than it does in neutral.

the two wires going to the clutch safety switch can be wired together and it will start any time the key is on.

you can find them on the handlebar by the clutch lever.

Most bikes won't start in gear if the kick stand is down.  Put it in neutral to start or lift the stand to start it in gear.
