I was thinking of mounting the TV to the wall when I move but, I'm nervous about it because, with my luck, the stud will be termite damaged and the tv will fall off the wall.

So, can anyone answer this:

1. What is a good mounting kit (that tilts) for a 42" LCD TV that doesn't cost $200?

2. Have any of you ever heard of tv mounting disasters?

3. Is there anything more that I should consider when approaching this aside from sinking the mount into studs so that the mount is level (plus whatever else the instructions indicate)?

I've plenty of carpentry experience but, I've never mounted anything as heavy as this on a wall before. I mean, it's about 90 pounds plus the weight of the mount held to a wall with what literally amounts to nothing more than 4 screws. And these screws are being shot into 2x6 studs of unknown condition.

  1. if you have termites then s***w the TV ,repair your home first. as to mounting the TV just read the directions on the mount they are self explanatory and easy to use

  2. There's plenty of mounts that will cost less than $200. Check amazon.com and they have tons of them. (I bought a mount for a 46" for $49.99 and works great.) Given that you have experience in carpentry...is good...BUT I still would not take the risk. If you don't do it correctly, not only do you risk damaging your television, but also the framework/drywall of your home. A friend tried to mount his plasma, and it fell right off the wall within 10 minutes, cracked his plasma and tore a massive hole in his living room. After replacing the plasma and repairs to the house, it cost him more than $4000.00. Mhy advice, go to a place like Best Buy or Circuit city, they offer basic TV mounting (wires NOT hiden +price of mount if you buy it from them.) for as low as $119.00. If you want the deluxe installation (wires hidden inside the walls) it runs something like $349.00. Not only will you get a professional to do it, but they also warranty the installation for up to 3 years. If it were ever to fall off or anything goes wrong with the installation, they'll replace your tv and complete any necessary repairs to your home to get it back to normal.
