  1. While Rome's Leonardo DaVinci airport is located in Fiumicino, outside of Rome, this site below reports that by car it is 45 minutes and by train 30 minutes.

The termini or terminal in Rome is big, encompassing buses also, so once there, you would still need to take a taxi to see a site. There is not one of note within walking distance. So, your time line to catch your next flight is very tight.

Apart from outdoor sites like The Spanish Steps or Trevi Fountain, most museums have long lines and even appointment times.http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Eur...

However, if I were you, and you landed on time and didn't have to recheck luggage, I'd hop on the train, get a taxi (don't bother with the underground system)in Rome and go to the two sites above, just to say you saw them and were in Rome. Toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain and you will return again to Rome some day and perhaps have longer to visit.

  2. Right now you might have 5-hour layover, but if your flight is delayed coming in, it may be less. Depending on what time of day your flight arrives, you might be dealing with traffic to get to the city center. This could take a long time! I think it is a little risky to plan on doing any sightseeing during your layover. But, if you  must...

I would take the train to Termini station versus taxi or bus. This way you aren't dealing with traffic. There is a Leonardo Express train service to Rome’s Termini Station (journey time: 35 minutes). From Termini you could take the metro (blue line) to the Colosseum and Forum. You may not have time to visit these attractions but you can get a good view of both from the outside.

Check out http://goeurope.about.com/cs/rome/l/bl_r... for a metro map

http://www.adr.it/Default.asp?L=3& gives you information on Fuimicino

If you want to see more of Rome, check with the airline to see if you can have a longer layover or spend the night.

  3. i wouldn't take the risk, Rome is city of traffic and u may loose the airplane. the airport in not in the city! but about 30 minutes of way and traffic!!!

    don't take the risk.

  4. Unfortunately 5 hours is not enough. See the sights of Rome Airport instead.
