There are three possibilities.  First, The prop hub has spun.  There's a rubber hub between the alum, or stainless part and the splined sleeve that slides over the prop shaft.  The cause is either running aground or hitting a submerged object.    Second is a broken drive shaft.  The drive is designed to snap at a pre-determined spot so that further damage not be done to drive.   Some times there is enough friction to get a little movement, before it begins to slip.   The third is the gear shift cable is bad and not fully engaging the shift cone.  I've listed these in order of frequency.  I hope you have boat insurance, It pays for striking hidden objects.   Good Luck!!!!!
