  1. What year is your Mercury 88 hp motor?

    2-stroke or 4-stroke?

    Carbed or fuel injection?

    How many carbs?

first, don't use starting fluid in a 2-stroke motor -- it has no lubricating qualities, but it will clean the oil right off the cylinder walls.

pre-mix in a spray bottle works just as good and won't burn up your engine.

Has the motor done this since you got it?

What maintenance has been done recently on this motor?

Is it on cold starts only, or warm starts as well?

When you pump the primer bulb, does it get hard and stay hard?

    Is the tank vented?

    Is there fuel fresh?

Have you determined that the tank is free of debris and water?

    Describe your cold start procedure.

    Describe your warm start procedure.

  2. CHECK THE VENT AND MAKE SURE ITS CLEAN, IF YOU WANT TO NO HOW TO CHECK IT OPEN UP THE GAS CAP AND SEE IF IT GETS GAS, IF IT DOES THE VENT IS DIRTY
