I have a 91 Mercedes that is having transmission problems?

I have a 1991 mercedes 190E that I am having transmission trouble with. I was driving home one night and reached about 55mph, when it shifted back into 2nd and the RPM's almost redlined. It is an automatic transmission. Since then, it will not shift into 3rd or overdrive. It will go to about 35mph, and that is almost redlining the RPM's. Does anyone know what the problem is? I have changed the transmission filter and fluid, but didn't help.

you may have burned up the modulator /a friend had same problems it cost her 1800.00 to rebuild transmission
