  1. You may have synchronizers going out. Get yourself a rebuilt transmission from a reputable shop.

  2. I would like this answer too. I have a Isuzu that does the same thing but in 4th gear.

  3. I have a 90 Toyoyta pick up. I have never had this problem but you didn't say whether you could put it back in gear with out grinding it. If it slips back in gear easily I'm not so sure that it is a bad syncronizer.I have had syncronizer gears go out in manual trans before and I always knew it because it was hard to get in gear with out hearing a grinding noise.

Eventualy, the sync gets stripped so bad it wont go in gear at all. If your not having that problem only popping out I'm thinking that it is just a simple thing as replacing the pilot shift lever bushing & seat: This is some plastic bushings that wear out in time but what they do is hold the shifter in place. When they get old and brittle and worn from the wear and tear of shifting they break and can't hold the shifter in place anymore.

This is a fairly cheap kit that you can get at any toyota parts place. Before I would tear my trannny up I would give this a try. I'm telling you from experience that all of the syncronizers I ever had trouble with it would grind just trying to shift and I've had my share of manual trannys and I've torn up a few by shiting and popping the clutch such as racing with someone.

When a synronizer is going out you know it. If it was me before I would drop the tranny I sure would try this but be careful if those bushings are busted in little pieces don't let any fall down in your tranny because then you will be replacing it even if the Sync gears were good. This guy had the same problem with a 91      try this website and read.

  4. bearing or syncronizer is worn.. the trans needs removed and repaired.

  5. its a toyota what do you expect ?

  6. the syncros are going out it your transmission

  7. 4th gear syncronizers in the transmission are bad,i just got done replacing some in a nissan pick up,4 wheel drive that was doing the same thing, its about a days job to do this ,and a few hundred to install them and replace everything, good luck.
