  1. Vehicles model year 1983 or older are tested for safety, but are exempt from emissions testing.

What kind of emissions test will my vehicle receive?

The different kinds of emissions tests, based on your vehicle’s model year, weight, and fuel type, are:

        * Light-duty gasoline vehicles model year 1996 and newer, including two- and four-wheel drive vehicles, will receive the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) test. The inspector connects your vehicle’s on-board computer to a computer in the station, and then downloads engine and emissions control data.

Protect your eligibility for an emissions waiver.  If emissions repairs are made to your vehicle and it does not pass the emissions re-test, you can apply to the state for an emissions waiver if you have spent the required minimum on the repair -- which varies depending on the age of your vehicle -- and if you meet other conditions.  In almost all cases, however, the emissions waiver application will not be accepted unless you can document that a state-registered emissions repair facility has done the work.  Click on What If My Vehicle Fails the Re-Test.  Remember: There are no waivers for safety-related failures on the Enhanced Emissions & Safety Test.

Light-duty gasoline vehicles model year 1984-1995 will receive a tailpipe test, with most tested on the dynamometer, a treadmill-like device that simulates real-world driving conditions. Vehicles capable of both two-wheel and four-wheel drive are tested on a dynamometer in two-wheel mode. All-wheel drive vehicles will be given an alternative test that includes a visual check of emissions components and a two-speed idle test. (this is your car)

So basically you need to pass emissions until a new law states that cars 95 and below do not need to pass emissions, or you can see what you can do about a waiver if your car does not pass. Good luck

  2. Depends what state you live in. But most likely, yes you will need to pass your emissions. In Connecticut, where I live, cars more than 25 years old are exempt. Check with your local DMV or even their website.

  3. depends on where u live...in my area..SW Virginia there is NO emissions test...just safety..
