i replaced distibutor cap, rotor, plugs, plug wires, checked the air filter. the misfiring began after i finished the work. have since checked and rechecked the firing order, checked to make sure no plug was cracked, and no arching on the wires. i have also taken the jeep to a mechanic, who was unable to diagnos the problem. the misfiring becomes worse at higher speeds (highway) and the longer the jeep is running (possible temp related...) don't know where else to go from here.

  1. You should have a check engine lite with a misfire ? The computer takes care of the timing, but if you got it far enough out when you moved the distributor cap and such, it is probably out of time and computer cannot correct. A check is to go in a dark garage after dark and open the hood with engine idling and look carefully for any sparks from ignition system. Look around the coil(s) the distributor towers and any where the wires come close to engine parts. Better find a new "mekanik" also.

NEVER replace any part till you KNOW the problem

  2. If you kept the old stuff you took off replace the new Dizzy cap with the old one because i have bought defective caps in the past. If that doesn't work try replacing each individual plug wire with one of the old ones as they can also be defective from new.

  3. did you reset the gaps on your spark plugs ?.........seamanab

  4. we can go further but first the simple things to check.

IF the spark plug wires are close to each other and they run parrallel it is possible for the electric spark to ''jump'' to another wire. try wrapping each wire in electric tape for more insullation and see if it makes a difference. then try spraying the wires with WD40.

I came up with this because you didn't have a problem before the tune up.
