I have a 97 dodge 4x4. some one changed the engine. how can i tell if its a 5.2 or a 5.9?

  1. look for a Z in the 8th  place in your vin.  if it has a Z its a 360 if not its a 5.2


  2. take the numbers off the block and run them on this site it will tell you what engine you have in it,good luck,http://www.mymopar.com/enginecastnumb.ht...

  3. you can look at the harmonic balancer as well .... if it is a big one then it is a 360 a small one then its a 318, or take off a valve cover and check out the heads as well ... But if it is a 360 be sure the tranny has the weights on the torq converter or you will tear up your tranny because the 360 is external balanced and the 318 is balanced internal this is the reason for the balancer size and weights on the torq converter!

  4. On the driver side of the engine block above the starter is the casting number referred to previously. Following the casting number on LA engines is the engine size: 318-xx or 360xx.
