I have a 9v battery (alkaline) device that I need to convert to rechargable?

I have an electric ignitor with a 9v battery in it (alkaline) and I'd like to covert the device to be rechargeable. I want to be able to replace the 9v battery with a rechargable one and wire in a battery charger so that I can just plug in an AC plug and charge the 9v when necessary. I know this must be possible, but don't have a background in electrical engineering. Essentially, I'd like to be able to plug it in and charge the battery.

  1. they do make "9v" rechargeables, but they are really about 7 volts, unless you buy a "real 9v" and expect to pay double for the battery.

You will need to build or buy a 9v charger, modify the device for a charge connector.

You can buy a lot of 9v batteries at Sams club for the cost of one 9v rechargeable and powersupply and mods to the ignitor.

  2. What you're looking at is not easy to do yourself, especially when you have no experience. You're better off just using a rechargable 9v battery and doing the manual in-out required.

If you want to charge it by plugging it in, you can use a transformer and simply hook it up on either terminal of the battery - be aware however you need a gentle charge rate or you might fry/burn your device. You also MUST observe the charge time, as overcharging can make it fry/burn too.

  3. The best way is to remove the battery completely with a 9 volt power source and just run the ignitor from that.  You can't use a battery charger because many of them require some voltage from the battery to be charged before they turn on.  But there are small, inexpensive 9 volt power supplies available and they're far less than a battery and charger.  The link below leads to one source but there are many others.
