I have a ? About my birth cert?

How would I know if my birth cert was not the one issued to my birth mom? Its not like my husbands or my kids? There are boxes that are blank that I think should be filled in they are on my kids and husbands is this normal and im over reacting? if not any suggestions to what I should do now?

  1. Hi Heather,

Look at the birth certificate you have.  There should be a "filing date" listed on there.  If that filing date is within a few days after the date you were born, it is probably your original birth certificate.

If the filing date is 6 months or later than the date you were born, then it's possible it was amended and that's not the original one you have.  You see, if an adoption was involved, it takes at least 6 months after someone has petitioned to adopt a child before that adoption can be finalized in court.  That's why there is a delay.  After the finalization, an amended birth certificate is created and filed.

Some moms do not know to get a copy of their child's original birth certificate for themselves before an adoption takes place.  Afterwards, it is too late because everything will be permanently sealed in most states.

You're right - lots of blanks is an indication that is NOT the original one you have.

Hope this helps.  Thanks for asking.  If you need more assistance, just come back and ask.

  2. My birth certificate is different from my husbands, which is different from my childs. If your husband wasn't born in the same county in the same year as you, it could very well just be different looking. You can call the county clerk and find out what you need to get another copy of your birth certificate. Maybe it is different.

  3. my birth certificate is differnt to my mams dads and brother's i found out his is because i was born in the house and not in a hospital, so it could be something simple like that?

  4. Which boxes are blank?

  5. They change birthcertificates over time plus each city seems to have their own way of doing them up.  My boys were born 2 1/2 years apart yet their certificates look nothing alike.  And mine is completely different too.  If you have any questions about the certificate you could go ask at the statistics place where it came from and see what information they may be able to offer.
