I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology/Psychology-what would I need to go to become a teacher?

Well it depends where you live. In Canada you are required to get an education degree to teach but in order to get an education degree you need a bachelor degree. You have a bachelor of arts degree which means you can teach a variety of subjects like sociology.

You will need to go and take your education courses. Some districts are in need of teachers and have programs that fast track those course with in class time, if you already have a degree.

I do not think that Soc. or Psych. are in need, but elementary, secondary science, math, and English are in great demand.

If you go for secondary, you will have to finish an endorsement in a specific area also.

Check with your local district about programs, they also have what is called provisional certifications that will allow you to teach while you finish your degree.

there are many colleges that offer certifications for people just like you. a good friend of mine did this, she had her bachelors in criminal justice and switched over to teaching... she's now teaching 2nd grade...

to make extra money while you are getting your certification you can substitute teach - as I've learned good ones are hard to find...

it depends on which level of teaching you want to do - what you want to teach, but you need to find out if Sociology/Psychology is a "teachable" subject if not, you'll have to take core courses based on what you want to teach...

My state, Missouri, this last year passed legislation so that lay people with degrees can teach in their field. For example someone working as a lab technician might be able to teach science. An accountant might be able to teach math. A store manager might be able to teach business.

With your degree, I would bet in our state, you could teach high school psychology or social studies.
