Can someone give me places in the Bible that discuss music? The reason I want this info is b/c my husband is Church Of Christ and don't believe instruments should be in church. I personally havent read anything saying it's okay or not. His argument is that it doesnt instruct you to have it in church. Any help would be appreciated.

  1. where is your submission to your husband , are you even a christian, and there is no scripture in the new testament about musical instrument, none whatsoever. It is a shame that all the answers so far are referring you to the old testament. there wasn't any church in the old testament.

  2. You will find numerous examples in the Psalms.

Psa 33:3  Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.

  3. A Bible question deserves a Bible answer!

Christ says he has "all authority" and the disciples were to teach the things He had commanded. (Matthew 28:18-20) Nowhere in the New Testament did the apostles teach or show an example of the use of instrumental music in worship of the church. ALL of the verses in the New Testament that talk about music in the church have SINGING as the type of music. (These verses are listed below.)

To use another type of music cannot be done from authority found in the New Testament because the New Testament nowhere authorizes its use. The authority to use instruments in the Christian church therefore does not come from God. If used, instruments must be authorized by men. If we follow a man's authority (teaching), does Christ still have "all authority" in our religious lives?  Most is not the same as “all”!

One of the verses that teaches about music is Col. 3:16. This verse specifically tells us to sing. The very next verse (verse 17) says, "Whatever you do in word or deed, DO ALL IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS."

"In the name of" means by the authority of, or according to the instructions. Jesus and the apostles did not authorize the use of mechanical instruments in the New Testament church. You cannot play an instrument by the authority, according to the instructions of, or in the name of Christ because he did not instruct it.

The New Testament did specify "singing" as the type of music we are to use in worship. To do anything else is to follow the commandments (doctrine) of men rather than God.  Teaching as doctrine the commandments of men makes worship “vain”, or useless in God’s eyes! (Matt. 15:9) Why not be satisfied to worship in the way God's word has authorized?   “We ought to obey God rather than men”!  (Acts 5:29)

When God told Noah to use "gopher wood", other types of wood were excluded. When Naaman was told to dip in the Jordan River, he knew other rivers were excluded (2 Kings 5). God has been specific about the music in the church, singing. Why add to his word?

Interesting, many of the founding fathers of denominations that now use instruments were opposed to their introduction. Among those against instrumental music were John Wesley, Adam Clark, John Calvin, and Martin Luther. So one should not question why we don't use them, the question should be "By what authority do you add them to your worship"? Why not be satisfied to simply worship as God's word instructs?

Some point out that David used instruments. As for David’s harp, He lived under the Law of Moses (Old Testament). We are now under the Law of Christ (New Testament).   If you bind one part of the Old Law today, you are subject to keep the whole law.

In Galatians 5:3, some were trying to bind circumcision, an Old Testament commandment. Paul said if they bound this one item, they were “debtor to keep the whole law”. In James 2:10, if you keep the whole law, but miss one point, you are guilty of all.

If you try to bring over authority for David’s harp from the Old Testament, you must with the same authority bring over all of the animal sacrifices, feasts, Passover, the Sabbath day observance, yearly trips to Jerusalem, and the all of the other Old Testament commands. We must keep the whole law if we keep any part.

If we try to justify ourselves by the Law of Moses, we have “fallen from grace!” (Galatians 5:4)

God is not worshiped with men's hands (Acts 17:25) but with the heart. This verse talks about God not living in a temple made with hands, but it also applies this to hand-made worship, yet many say they worship on an instrument that was made with hands and played with the hands.

The instrument God wants is our heart. Ephesians 5:19 instructs us to make melody in the heart. These verses also say the purpose of music in worship is to speak and teach. An instrument cannot do this. In fact, it is more difficult to speak where there is background noise, therefore an instrument may interfere with these scriptural purposes of music in worship.

We should not add to or take away from God’s word.  We should worship as he instructs!  The New Testament does not instruct the use of a mechanical instrument in worship, so the church of Christ has no authority from the Bible to add it.

Yes it would seem that at times, the God at least tolerated instruments in the Old Testament, but we now have a new covenant, the New Testament.

Also by the end of the Old Testament, God’s word says, “Woe to you… Who sing idly to the sound of stringed instruments, and invent for yourselves musical instruments like David”  (Amos 6:3-5)

Does this sound like God now wants instruments?

  4. They are to numerous to mention but Psalms 33:2  Give thanks to God on the harp, on an instrument of 10 strings make melody to him.

3 sing to him a new song do your best at playing on the strings along with joyful shouting.

Isaiah 23:16  Required to play music and sing to god.

Revelation 15:2  That was in heaven playing music so isn't that like church.  In God's heavenly throne.

King David wrote lots of Psalms which is actually a song book.

He played a harp and sang to God.  God's nation of Israel always sang songs and played musical instruments, mentioning tambourines and bells, trumpets and the sound of the trumpet is many times mentioned in the bible.

I have heard that before and that is so strange to me when God in the bible required them to use musical instruments and to sing to him.

Genesis 4:21 shows them making musical instruments from man's earliest beginnings.  Every culture has music ,where did they get this desire for songs and music?  If not from God.

  5. The only references I can think of are in the OT. There were plenty of musical instruments in the temple.

    Some are-

    Nu 10:10

    Ezra 3:10

    Neh 12:27,35

    Psa 150:3-5

    Isa 38:20

edit:  No church or denomination is perfect. They all have problems. The Church of Christ (not united) is a pretty straight group of folks. One of their few errors ( and I do mean few) is no music. They also struggle with a need for baptism.

    Yeah, sure, plenty.

  7. He is correct.  Even in the Old Testament, God never instructed man to make any kind of instrument other than the trumpet to call a meeting.  He even called the instruments of David, "David's instruments" in 2 Chronicles.  In the New Testament, we are commanded to sing songs, not play instruments.  Our worship is to God, not performances of men for men.  It is not a show, but God is the only audience.  We all must sing, pray, read, give, partake of the Lord's Supper and meet together each Sunday.  We can not add to or take away from what God has commanded.

  8. I was raised Church Of Christ(23 yrs). I can give some verses to relay to him. Psalms 33:3,Psalms 47:1, Psalm 150:2-6. I Cor. 14:26,33,40.    Ephesians 5:19, and I Tim. 2:8. There are more. But Those were just handy. The Bible talks quite specifically about all types of instruments being played to the glory of God. People in the church also have bible references for clapping, dancing, raising their hands in praise, and shouting.

  9. Your husband is misinformed.

  10. Isaiah 30:29-30

29 Ye shall have a song, as in the night when a holy solemnity is kept; and gladness of heart, as when one goeth with a pipe to come into the mountain of the LORD, to the mighty One of Israel.

30 And the LORD shall cause his glorious voice to be heard, and shall shew the lighting down of his arm, with the indignation of his anger, and with the flame of a devouring fire, with scattering, and tempest, and hailstones.

Beware of making merry in church. You should be humble before your God.

  11. look through the psalms they talk about using instruments all the time.

  12. Habakkuk 2:20  But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.

    GOD bless

music (rock n roll) was publicly condemned in the 50's

true music is a form of worship to God and the bible does say that.

i once watched a movie which depicted some group of people that believed a person should not singor whistle while working. it was a group that looked a mormon group or an amish group, but it was wrong!

i dont listen to any music but periodically, I did listen to top 40 and rock n roll as a teenager. but i realized that listening to music was a cause of depression.

however churches that ban instruments in the church is the first time ive ever heard of this.

maybe just in part the fact that angels have trumpets will be a significant rebuke.

also if instruments were ever used in temples or synogogues might be another rebuke.

i think history of U.S. also condemned fiddle and dancing and wearing red paint on the face (what did they call it?)

i think in a church setting music should be limited to worship i dont think instruments should be banned if they are used in the spirit of holiness. whereas the fiddle often provoked physical desires.  and riotous living.

there are times when David played his music and soothed king saul.  there was another time when he danced throughout all jerusalem. but one of his wives rebuked him, and he rebuked her by forbidding something.

the question to ask is: Did jesus ever play musical intrument would he have been limited to harps and flutes or would he allow drums and bass guitars or electric guitars.

there are many churches that allow contemporary christian songs to played in their church. Was david wrong, are these churches wrong.

is driving a car wrong? is having a tv wrong? is paying money to theatres for admission wrong.

does all of life have to conform to sunday worship everyday of our lives.? !!!

  14. The Church of Christ like every Protestant Church has a singular teaching that set's them apart from other Churches and the No Musical instrument's is there unique belief. As him if the Bible tell's them that a Woman's Head should be covered and it does, then ask him why the women in the Church of Christ do not have there heads covered..

  15. I believe they play harps in heaven. If your husband is that particular maybe he should re-read the bible that he holds so dear and true to his beliefs.

  16. The Bible also doesn't instruct priests to artificially increase the volume of their voices, but thousands of priests do precisely that every Sunday.  Just because the Bible doesn't explicitly say to do something, that's not the same as forbidding it.

    .

  17. Read Psalm 150.  Worship the Lord WITH instruments, of all kinds  :)

The "church of Christ" is a cult that teaches the false gospel of "water baptism regeneration".  They reject the free gift of salvation in Jesus Christ, and replace that with their water baptism nonsense.

  18. Whether you use musical instruments or not it is a local church issue.

The type of music is far more important. Worldly music has crept into the church like CCM, but there is a lot of Christian liberty in this.

It is not the instrument or lack thereof that is important but the character of the music that is performed. Drums are the exception though, not found in the Bible, they are always associated with pagan festivals of the gods and sacrifices.

  19. I'm glad to say your husband is wrong. Praise the Lord! Strike up the band and let's give praise to the greatest musician every. Here he is the Lord God Almighty! Yeeeaaaa! More, More! Encore!

  20. oh goodness. ICOC is a cult...
