    Resolution

    Complete the following steps:

       1. In BlackBerry Desktop Manager, click Options.

       2. Click Connection Settings.

       3. Click Detect.

       4. Click OK.

    Cause 2

    The cradle does not communicate with the BlackBerry smartphone and the computer.

    Resolution

    To determine the performance of the cradle, complete the following tasks:

       1. Connect another working BlackBerry smartphone to the computer with the cradle.

       2. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone and cradle to another computer.

       3. Connect another cradle to the computer.

    Cause 3

    The BlackBerry smartphone does not communicate correctly with BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

    Resolution

    To determine the performance of the BlackBerry smartphone, complete the following tasks:

       1. Confirm that the USB cable is properly connected to both the BlackBerry smartphone and the computer.

       2. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to another working cradle on a different computer.

       3. If using BlackBerry Desktop Manager 3.6 or earlier, verify that the versions of BlackBerry® Desktop Software and BlackBerry® Device Software match. Contact your wireless service provider to access the latest software version.

       4. Perform a hard reset of the BlackBerry smartphone. For instructions, see KB02141.

    Cause 4

    The COM port is unavailable.

    Resolution 1

    Eliminate the possibility of port conflicts by disabling the following:

        * Synchronization software used by other personal digital assistants (PDAs)

        * Microsoft® ActiveSync® (which monitors serial ports for a connected mobile device, making these ports unavailable for other applications).

          Note: To disable ActiveSync and make these ports free, select File > Connection Settings, and select the Allow connection to this COM port check box.

        * Antivirus software

        * Fax software

        * Modem software

        * An infrared port in the BIOS

    Confirm the port settings:

       1. On the computer, right-click My Computer.

       2. Select Properties.

       3. Click the Hardware tab.

       4. Click Device Manager.

       5. Expand the Ports menu tree, and double-click the port.

       6. On the Port Settings tab, confirm the settings are as follows:

          Bits Per Second Data Bits Parity Stop Bits Flow Control

          9600 8 Mark 1 xon/xoff

       1. On the computer, right-click My Computer.

        * The BIOS may not be up-to-date. Perform a BIOS update to resolve the issue. For more information, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles: 281965, 281995, 310560, and 180129.

    If the BlackBerry smartphone is not being detected by a Sony® PCG-XGP laptop computer, change the default COM Port for the docking station from COM2 to COM1 in the CMOS:

       1. On the desktop computer, right-click My Computer and select Properties.

       2. Click the Hardware tab, then click Device Manager.

       3. Expand Ports to determine the COM Port number.

    To change the port number:

    Warning: Modifying the computer registry can cause substantial damage to the Windows operating system. Document and back up the existing registry entries prior to implementing any changes.

       1. Click Start > Run.

       2. Type regedit and open HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Manager\Settings

       3. Right-click Connection Settings, select Modify, and type the port number you want to use.

    There is an issue with communicating through the USB port.

    Eliminate a USB connection problem as follows:

       1. In BlackBerry Desktop Manager, click Options.

       2. Click Connections.

       3. Click Detect.

       4. Click OK when asked to verify the USB connection. A message appears stating whether or not your BlackBerry smartphone was detected.

       5. If you are using a USB-to-serial converter, confirm that it is compatible.

       6. Verify that the operating system on the computer is compatible with the USB-to-serial converter.

    Cause 7

    The COM Port is disabled in the BIOS.

    Resolution

    Enable the COM Port in the BIOS and verify that a value of Auto or PnP is assigned to the COM Port.

    Note: The user interface is different for each BIOS, and the process for enabling the COM Port varies accordingly. Contact your wireless service provider for assistance.

    Cause 8

    The COM Port drivers are not installed.

    Resolution

    Contact your wireless service provider for more information on installing the COM Port drivers.

    Power Management is enabled.

    Resolution

    Disable the Power Management on the USB Root Hub in the BlackBerry® Device Manager using the following steps:

       1. On the desktop computer, right-click My Computer and select Properties.

       2. Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

       3. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.

       4. Right-click the USB Root Hub and select Properties.

       5. Click the Power Management tab, and then remove the check from the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box.

       6. Click OK.

       7. Repeat steps 4 through 6 for each USB Root Hub listed in the BlackBerry Device Manager.

    Cause 10

    The BlackBerry smartphone is connected to a laptop computer using a docking station.

    Resolution

       1. Disconnect the docking station from the laptop computer and connect the BlackBerry smartphone directly to the laptop computer.

       2. Re-install the BlackBerry Device Software using the application loader. For more information, see KB03621.

    Cause 11

    The USB drivers are incorrectly installed due to a conflict with a third-party driver.

    Resolution

    Verify the installation of the USB drivers:

       1. On the desktop computer, right-click My Computer and select Properties.

       2. Click the Hardware tab.

       3. Click Device Manager.

       4. Locate the Universal Serial Bus Controllers and view the driver details by right-clicking on the RIM Composite Device or the BlackBerry Device.

       5. Select Properties and on the Driver tab, see Driver Details.

       6. If the Driver Details includes any other drivers than RimUsb.sys (for example, SIUSBFlt.sys from the LaCie Group), the other driver should be removed from the system. Contact the vendor of the additional driver for removal instructions.

          Note: You may look under Add/Remove Programs for any programs from LaCie Group and remove them from the computer. Simply changing the file name of the driver using Windows Explorer may cause other USB device errors.
