I know that I would probably need a zoom or telephoto lens, but I don't really know what the difference is between them (is there one?). I am on a pretty tight budget, so if anyone can come up with an idea of cost involved that would be great.

  1. a good quality high speed lens (ie with an apature around f3.5)  I'd suggest around a 300mm lens, to get close up to the action.

You do get what you pay for (£300-400 for resonable quality), so goto your local camera shop and see if they have any bargains...

  2. A very expensive one! You need wide aperture (for fast shutter speed) and a long focal length (400 plus)

That will be a few thousand pounds to do the job properly.
