I have a Split system installed in my townhouse that is going on 12 years old. I have occasional problems with the outdoor Condensor/compressor... I have alreday had the compressor replaced but the whole unit is getting pretty unstable..can I just replace this outdoor unit or do I need to replace the air handler inside the house also?? Thanks

  1. you can just change the condenser out without changing out the air handler lots of companies will try and get you to change both out at the same time.

  2. Most every changeout that I do is the condenser only. Most customers don't want a complete changeout due to the extra cost. There is nothing wrong with that either. If it's not broke, don't fix it.The SEER will be better on the outside unit than the inside unit most of the times but will not cause any adverse operation.A Goodman unit won't break you when you need to change it and they have excellent warranties.Good luck.

  3. You can just replace the outside unit. But most a/c services will want to change out whole unit.

I changed my whole unit out at 24 years. It was still working fine, but I had an opportunity to get a new one on a car trade deal-I took it.

As long as your a/c is efficient enough, I would look for someone that I could trust to keep it running. You may have to shop around- some guys are interested in a good reputation, others are only interested in money.

I would think that to replace both inside and outside units on a split system you will spend a bunch- maybe 8-10k,

  4. I have always been of the opinion that if you change out the condenser you should change out the air handler at the same time.  The reasoning being that they can work well together.  I guess it would be alright to just replace the condenser only.  Just make sure the Condenser and A/H are compatible.

    Good Luck
