Question:

I have a Constipated baby?

My infant is 12 weeks old. He has been struggling with constipation since I started giving him cereal (before you tell me it's too early he is 16 lbs and in the 97% for height and weight... he was waking every 1 1/2 -2 hours to eat. In desperation for some sleep his doctor said go for it) So to counter act the cereal constipation I give him 4 oz of apple juice daily (per the doctor) It's going on day 4 now since he has pooped. Any suggestions? He isn't fussing but I am pretty sure that we are approaching the time to worry (It's been almost 7 years since I had an infant in the house so I don't remember all these little things anymore)

Thanks in advance!

  1. I like the prune juice idea, but I don't know if babies can digest that (sensitive stomachs and all, but for all I know it is fine).  I would suggest giving him a baby food that has lots of berries, cause berries can also help with pooping.  Although, if this goes on for too much longer you should see the doctor again.  Maybe you could get a presciption for baby ex-lax or something.

  2. My oldest baby had the same problem.  My doctor said to give him prune juice instead of apple juice.  I started out with one ounce of prune juice to 3 oz of water.  When that still didn't work I stepped up to half and half.  That did the trick, and I continued to give him the juice with his cereal every night.

You can also try a spoonful of Karo syrup in the bottle, but that never worked for me.

  3. My son was the same was.  I struggled with constipation with him once he started cereal.  Try a bottle of apple juice a couple times a day.  I know some people frown on it but you can also try a tablespoon of dark Karo syrup in his bottle.  If that doesnt work introduce prunes.  But just a little bit.  My daughter loved prunes; however, too much and her belly would get really upset.

  4. Get him off that rice cereal that is the most constipating thing you can give him !

  5. Prune juice might help a little more than apple juice.  Also you might try taking a rectal thermometer and with some vaseline just insert the tip a little and that will sometimes initiate the " have to go feeling " and he may start to p**p.

  6. Prune juice or some pureed prunes should do he trick. Not too much tho or it will cause the opposite effect.
