  1. Smarter in what sense? I'm not really sure how fish intelligence can be evaluated. But I do hope you have the two in separate aquariums as bettas tend to nip at the fins of goldfish and gold prefer colder water.

  2. It doesn't matter which is smarter. What matters is that you have them in different tanks.

Goldfish are coldwater fish and prefer colder water. Bettas are tropical fish and prefer warmer water. If you have them in the same tank, that's not good.

Plus Bettas nip long fins, and Goldfish have long fins.

Bettas deserve a minimum of 2.5 gallons with a filter and heater.

Fancy Goldfish grow up to a foot long and require a 20+ gallon tank with a filter.

Common Goldfish grow up to a foot and a half long and require a 55+ gallon tank with a filter.

EDIT: I suppose I should still answer the question...

Fish can be trained no matter what species they are. I have seen reports of Bettas being trained to do "tricks" and Goldfish being able to swim through a maze.

But how would you know if your Goldfish is "smarter"?

EDIT 2: Goldfish DO NOT have a 3-6 second memory. Mythbusters busted this myth, by teaching them to swim through a maze over the course of a couple of months.
