  1. Airbags deploy only when they might be needed to prevent serious injury.

Frontal driver and passenger airbags are designed to inflate in moderate to severe frontal crashes equivalent to hitting a solid barrier at 10-12 mph.

Some manufacturers use different inflation thresholds depending on whether people are using their safety belts.

Thresholds of 10-12 mph typically are used for unbelted occupants, but thresholds are higher — about 16 mph — for belted occupants because the belts alone are likely to provide adequate protection up to these moderate speeds.

  2. Actually it's a combination of three events that triggers the air bag.  The sensors have to detect impact within a narrow range of degrees from the front, the vehicle must be moving above a certain speed, usually around 15 mph, and there must be rapid deceleration as there would be in the case of hitting a tree or guard rail, or a head on collision.

  3. Like RT(R) says, the impact is the cause of them going off, or there might be a problem with them. Ask your car dealer.

  4. I don't think speed has anything to do with it but the impact is suppose to deploy them.

  5. sounds like you lived through it.......some people that try to commit insurance fraud like it when the air bags go off.

If they did deploy it would be very expensive......is your car totaled?

  6. no speed. force of impact determines deployment
