Question:

I have a Glasspar 16 ft 1968 boat. What is the max size engine you can put on it..the 35 hp I had, just died!

  1. There should be a tag inside the boat maybe the back , with the info on the boat and will show the max HP the boat will handle..............................UJN


  2. Strictly from memory, I remember an Evinrude 80.  but check the cap. plate, I think it's up by the steering wheel.

  3. Richard C , you mean a 1968 80hp? Now like 60hp.

  4. you want to comply with the coast guard rating plate, but if you can't find it, the USCG boatbuilding guidelines for a 16ft boat tell you Length times Width times 2, minus 90, rounded up to the next multiple of 5.

    So with a 5 foot transom width, max hp = 70.

    Make darn sure the transom is solid.  Also make sure the type of steering mechanism you have is safe for the size of engine you select.
