  1. Microsoft originally licensed Java from Sun, which created Java.

Microsoft tried to "enhance" and "Windowfy" it.  Sun sued, and Microsoft

was forced to stay with an old version of the Java Virtual Machine.

Microsoft has said they plan to drop support for Java, although IE 6 still

comes with the old JVM.  This can actually be a good thing, since

downloading Sun's Java Plug-in means you've got the Latest and Greatest

    version.

The basic Java philosophy, to write code once that runs on virtually any

OS and CPU, could be seen as a threat to the (officially recognized)

    monopoly of Unca Bill.

Bottom line, download Sun's Java plug-in and install it.  The plug-in will

allow you to make it the Java Runtime Environment for every browser on

your machine (download once, install many . . .), you will avoid problems

caused by older versions of the JRE and strike a blow against the empire.
