But to look at the connector it looks like an optical connector, not at all like the pictures I have seen on the net ???, and so far I can't seem to find any reference to DVI and optical !!, it even has the little black plug normally found in optical ???.

Can anyone throw any light on this please, I want to connect a blu ray player (with HDMI) to my plasma.

Thanks,

Norman

  1. DVI was the early form of HDMI, but it only carries the video.

You can get a cable with HDMI on one side and DVI on the other from BlueJeans for about $40.  Buy you also have to run optical for the sound.  This is why your TV has an optical jack next to the DVI jack.

    My advice is:

    - Run HDMI-DVI to the Plasma from the BluRay player

    - Run optical from the BluRay player to the receiver

This way you fire up the receiver for DVD watching.  Dont bother with the TV speakers for DVD's.

  2. If it has a DVI input on the television then you will need an hdmi to dvi cable, I know best buy carries them. Going Dvi is not bad persay, however it will only pass video through it, therefor to receive audio from the blu ray player, you would have to run either the fiber optic out (optical) or run a digital out via orange rca cable! Dvi has several prong connecter sticking out on the male side of the cable, as well as 1 (generally larger prong) sticking out but it it sticking out in a horizontal direction. Should look something like this

(::::::::::::: -) if your plasma has that connection then i would run an hdmi to dvi connector as well as a fiber optic cable out from the blu ray and into the tv/ receiver!

  3. what..?

but surely its not HD if it doesnt have an hdmi..
