I have Toast but dont know what other software to download, I am not very computer literate so nothing too complicated, I just want to Edit holiday movies from my Sony handycam that records directly onto a mini disc. I purchased the external drive/burner to get over the mini disc problem. Thanks

  1. DO NOT put the minidisc into your slot loading drive - only use the drawer loading external drive for that minidisc.

Download and install HandBrake. You will rip the DVD with that.

Then bring that ripped video file into iMovie or Final cut. Edit. Use iDVD to burn the DVD.

Warning: The video will not be very good. DVD based camcorders record the worst quality video because they compress so much. If you recorded in "long play" mode it will be even worse. When you have an opportunity, replace that DVD camcorder with miniDV tape (for best quality video - and using the Firewire400 port on the computer and DV port on the camcorder).

This is not a Mac issue but a camcorder issue - these DVD based camcorders should never have been brought onto the market - the camcorder manufacturers should recall them and recycle them and people should get their money back.

  2. There's some info at the link, but it's not simple.  There's a lot of discussion about this on the web - the most consistent advice seems to be to sell the camcorder and buy a MiniDV one.

  3. You may try this DVD ripper for Mac, it can help you rip DVD into hard drive, then you can edit the video with iMovie.

Hope it helps and have a nice day.
