I went to a Cal State for my Master's but I have to go to a University of California school for the PhD, so can I get it done faster since I already have the Master's degree?

  1. Yes, but if they have a qualifying exam, you'll have to take it even if you passed the one at your old school already.

  2. You still need to get ready for the comps, which could take a year or so, design your original research, and then finish the dissertation.  Depends how fast you research and write!

  3. It will be about three years to finish.

  4. A PhD is an advancement of your studies after you complete the graduate work for your Master's. The length of the program depends on the coursework you choose, your specific area of study and how long it takes to write your dissertation. You cannot pursue a doctorate unless you have a Master's. Holding a Master's has no bearing on the length of time the PhD will take to complete.
