  1. Well, first thing, a DUI in NJ is 9 insurance points (this has NOTHING to do with what shows on your motor vehicle report).  At 9 insurance points, unless you are with Progressive or assigned risk already, your policy will be nonrenewed and you will have to go to either assigned risk or Progressive.  With assigned risk, the State assigns a company for you.  Nothing will happen to your policy until renewal when they find out about it, they will pull your motor vehicle report.  You have a better chance of getting a better rate with Progressive.  When I lived in NJ 14 yrs ago, each insurance point was approximated $100 surcharge PER point per year.  I have heard this is about $200 per point per year now, which is probably close.

Like I said though, your current company will probably nonrenew you anyway.  When you get close to your renewal date (at least 30 days before), if you are with a "standard" company, call an independent agent that has Progressive as one of their companies (your current ageny may already have them) & get a quote.  Progressive (at least in New England) doesn't seem to charge as much for a DUI as an at fault accident, I don't know if this applies in NJ.

NJ does not have SR22s so you do not have to worry about that.

Also, your license will be suspended for 6 months for first offense & you have to pay a fine to the DMV for 3 yrs, it used to be $1,000 per year for 3 yrs but I am not sure if that has changed.

  2. You will get all DWI/DUI information from http://dwiblogs.blogspot.com/

  3. Well, it's not that cut and dried.  IF you don't get flat out cancelled for that DUI, expect it to go up between 25% and 50%.  But YOUR AGENT can give you a better idea.

  4. Well if you got a DUI, do you have to file an SR22? No matter what, your insurance rates are going to go up alot.

A friend of mine got a DUI last year (age 20) and her insurance went up about $100 a month.  It really just depends on your insurance company.  Some companies may not insure you at all and some will offer you cheaper rates than others.

Even though getting a DUI will increase your insurance premium, don't just settle for the first rate quote you get. I would compare 3-5 different insurance companies to see who offers you the best rate.
