I'm looking for a camera expert to help me out here, I'm a total beginner! I just bought a Nikon D60 after having it reccommended to me. I do not currently have the extension lens (the long zoom one?) because they were out of stock where i purchased my camera. Now I'm looking to buy one and I have no clue which one to buy. Can any one give me advice on what to buy and what they are exactly for? Can I still take good photos without the lens for the time being?

Thanks!

  1. The 18-55mm AF-S VR lens that your camera came with is perfect you can go from Landscapes 18mm to nice portraits 55mm and should keep you busy shooting for quite sometime. You may want a telephoto lens in the future to shoot things such as animals and sports at a distance. Then I would look at the 55-200mm AF-S VR or the 70-300 AF-S VR. But for now if you are just starting out the 18-55 should be more then enough to capture great images.

Read and study your owners manual and look into taking a class in photography the camera you bought is totally adjustable and leaning how to use all the functions will help you become a better photographer.

  2. So You Only Have The 18-55mm Lens?

I have that lens too, and i agree, we do need to upgrade. You say you want a lens, with a good zoom, right? you should get this lens, it's the nikkor 70-300mm lens, it's has a much longer focal length than the 55-200mm lens, here's the link:

    it's only 150$, or cheaper..

But, it doesn't have VR like your 18-55mm lens, so if you plan to use a shutter speed less than 1/70, you need to get the VR version, this is it :

it's around 480$, which is much more expensive than the one without VR, however, if you have the money, you should get the one with Vibration Reduction, but if you take pictures outside, you should get this lens

  3. yes you can take good photos without the extra lenses
