I have a Open Bite Question

i'm 15 and i have an anterior open bite because i used to suck my thumb but i stopped when i was 10 and now i have a tounge thrust problem. I've been wearing braces for 2 years now and I have an appliance in my mouth so that my tounge won't go through my open bite when i talk and swallow. I've been reading the Q's&A's on here and alot of people say that the open bite can only be treated by jaw surgery and when they get their braces off the open bite opens again. Should I get surgery or keep my braces on?

  1. This is not an easy question to answer and should be diagnosed by a certified orthodontist. The reason is because the problem can be caused by any one or combination of the following: skeletal abnormalities, dental abnormalities, or simply due to a bad habit. An open bite can be treated without surgery in many cases but if your orthodontist is working with an oral surgeon they may recommend something called Orthognathic surgery. It's where they straighten the teeth independently with braces, and then bring your lower jaw to your upper jaw surgically. I think this is what you might be thinking of.

Reading other people's experiences might lead you to lean towards a treatment that might not be right for you which can be harmful. Stick with a pro you trust. Check out my website if you want to read up more about orthodontics.

  2. I know of a woman who had braces for an open bite and her teeth shifted and she again had to have braces. This time they did jaw surgery and her smile is gorgeous. She says that she is glad she had this done.

My daughter too had jaw surgery but for an overbite. Her results too are amazing. They told her that with jaw surgery the jaw goes temporarily numb which helps with the pain and they were right. she told me she would have this done in a heart beat because of the results were so worth it.

  3. i'd recommend keeping the braces on to train your tongue to stop. if you get surgery, you may keep doing that. talk to your orthodontist.

  4. the habits u mentioned lead to open bite , most cases are resolved by fixed appliances and habit breaking appliances as in ur case , so i think ur on the right track , don worry ..this much shd be fine to take care of the open bite
