I have a friend who was born and is still currently a citizen of Pakistan. He completed his BCom (Bachelor of Commerce) in a two year program in a Pakistani university and now, he plans on becoming a certified U.S. CPA (Certified Public Accountant)—however there are a few issues he needs to be sorted out:
1. What is the eligibility (state education and experience requirements) to sit for the Uniform CPA Exam? Does the U.S. recognize BComs completed within a 2 year program? Or does it require one year further study? I know eligibility to sit for the Uniform CPA Exam varies from each individual State Boards of Accountancy.
2. If the eligibility only recognizes U.S. bachelor degrees as an acceptable prerequisite, then is there some sort of alternative exam he can take to earn his CPA?
3. I know some states have the “150 hour rule†(5 years full time equivalent study), however, as mentioned previously, he only completed 2 years. Do you have any suggestions as to how he can further his chances to take the CPA exam?
