I would think there would be an IN HDMI slot and an OUT slot but there's not. Also, when I play my iPod through the system, the rear two speakers don't play.

  1. Modular home theaters are not usually overloaded with ins and outs. They are designed to be a trade off in price and complexity.

Does you TV have only one HDMI input? That would be kind of rare, but they are out there. If it has two or more, problem solved. Hook up the HDMI to the TV and the sound to the receiver on a non-video input. If the TV has only one HDMI-in then I recommend the linked HDMI switch. I personally own it and it is unbeatable for the price.

As for iPod sound, mp3 players only put out two channels. Your Panasonic may have some sort of setting to output two channel input through all speakers, but I would actually EXPECT that it would not put out any sound through the rear speakers in the normal mode.
