Does anyone know what would be causing brown spots on the leafs of my Umbrella plant? I think it might have to do with too much direct sunlight. But I am not sure. I have always had these plant and never had this problem. I also have a dwarf Umbrella plant that is doing fantastic.

What's going on with my big Umbrella plant. I am sad I love these plants I don't want it to dye.

It is in direct sunlight for a good half of the day.

The house is dry I water it every 3 days or so.

The home temp is 70-80 F

It's about 2 feet tall. I repotted it to a larger pot when I bought it.

I have not fertilised it at all. I got it a month ago.

What is going on?

  1.   I am going to guess that it has been staying too wet and not drying out for the amount of roots you have on the plant.  Often these plants come into the nursery or plant store with a very small amount of roots on them. They grow them very fast and usually the root system doesn't match the amount of plant on top.  Never repot until you have had the plant for a while unless it is to put it into a decorator pot that is approximately the same size as the old pot. Make sure there is plenty of drainage and never let water sit at the bottom in the drain pan for more than an hour or so. Don't water but once a week and I hate to say it but the spots are probably a plant disease that takes over when plants are kept too wet.  It may be rotting the roots.  You need to back off on the watering and if they aren't too far gone it will come back.  Let it dry out before watering it again.

  2. 1) Fertilize it with a Tropical Ornamental Fertilizer.

    2) Your house might be too dry (Air conditioner?)

    3) Look for small insects, could be a leaf miner.

    4) Take it as it is to your local garden center and ask for help.

  3. It doesn't seem to like direct sun.
