The bearings dust cover is missing from one side of the axle. Should I be able to find this cover at a bike shop, or must I buy a new axle? If I have to buy a new axle how do I measure the current axle in order to find a replacement that will fit this 26 inch x 1 3/8 inch wheel?

Thanks in advance for your help

  1. ask a dealer to be sure

  2. Puch was made by a pretty cool Austrian manufacturer, Austro-Daimler.

Most shops will have absolutely no dea what you're talking about and will try to get you to junk the bike and buy a new made-in-china bike.

Are you talking about the axle for the 3spd hub?

    Is it a Sturmey-Archer hub?

in any case, it's a nice bike.  i'd buy a new front wheel, they're not expensive.  probably a 27".  new bikes have 700c which is slightly smaller but can work IF the brakes reach.  hang on to the old wheel, in case you find a replacement part and want to "restore" it.

  3. I assume you want the little metal cover that covers the bearings, right?

That is going to be tough to find for such an old bike. A new axle won't do it BUT you might be able to find a bearing cone that has an attached cover. It won't be perfect but will afford some protection.

To corect an earlier answer, Austro Daimler was made by Puch... not the other way round.
