  1. If you've got loops on the bottom, the top tension is slack.  If you've got loops on the top, the bottom tension is slack.

The most common cause of this malady is threading with the presser foot down.  It must be UP when threading the upper tension to allow the thread to enter it.  You can drop the presser foot when you're ready to thread the needle.

Try rethreading with the presser foot up, and set the upper tension to 4 or 5 if you've been messing with it.  Try a test seam and see how it goes.  Adjust the upper tension if needed after the test seam.

You may also have thread bits, fuzz and accumulated gunk in the upper tension.  The cure for this is to "floss" the upper tension with a fold of cotton shirt-weight fabric moistened with rubbing alcohol or unflavored vodka.

  2. adjust the thread tension, if this doesn't help try cleaning out the dust and lint from the bobbin holder and oil your machine. what kind of thread are you using?  I also had this problem when I used cheap thread and all it took was buying a better grade of thread

  3. If the needle is threaded correctly and the tension is set correctly, it's possible that you have the bobbin area threaded incorrectly.  Refer to your manual for the proper placement of the bobbin and the proper threading of the bobbin mechanism.  Be sure the bobbin thread is drawn up out of the throat plate under the foot.  If it isn't drawn up properly then you will get snarls and tangles.  There is also a little s***w on either the bobbin case (if there is one) or near where the bobbin is threaded. (for a drop in bobbin.)  This s***w can get too tight or too loose, try to loosen it a bit if it's pulling the needle inot bottom side loops.  This will be in the instruction book for the machine.   Finally, be sure the thread tails of both the needle and the bobbin are long enough and are pulled to the back of the foot before you begin to sew.  If you don't have an instruction manual you can usually obtain one from the singer website.

  4. If the stitching on the bottom of the fabric (the side you can't see, then the problem is 'up top', most probably the tension gauge, expecially if the stitches are loopy. If the stitching is loopy on top, then it's the bobbin that's at fault

  5. Adjust the tension until it is to your satisfaction on a piece of spare cloth. I haven't got a Singer, so I don't know how you do it on them. Good luck.
