Question:

I have a Sony Big Screen and a noise is coming from the rear that sounds like a rattling fan ? Can I fix it ?

It shuts off after a few minutes when you turn the tv off. very annoying and stops for brief moment and starts back up sometimes getting louder at moments

  1. take it back/exchange it/return it/get it fixed under warranty/just dont open it up/


  2. I'm assuming you have a plasma.  It is a fan to cool the circuit boards.  It's normal to hear it,  but if it is loud enough to be annoying i would get it checked and possibly put some foam around it to reduce the rattling.

  3. Your right, sounds like the fan is going out.  If you have a newer HDTV the fan helps keep the circuitry and the lamp cool, hence why you still here the fan going after you turn off your TV.  The fan will blow for a minute to cool down the lamp.  If your HDTV is still under warranty then it's an easy fix, just call and have a tech come out and replace the fan.  If not your going to have to look up the part number and order a fan from Sony.  Don't put anything over the fan or try to deafen the noise.  This will just cause your lamp and circuitry to get hot and your looking at spending more money.  If your basically handy you can order the part and replace it.  I have a Sony SXRD and had the same problem.  Hope this helps.
