  1. If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder….

Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.

The fine print in your manual makes reference to firewire (ieee 1394) connection.

  2. get a fire wire

  3. I know how confusing it can be for people in your position because although camcorder makers bundle USB cables with their camcorders, they're not the best way to transfer tape clips such as those from MiniDV or HDV. The above suggestion about grabbing yourself a FireWire (also called i.Link and DVlink but properly known as IEEE1394) is correct, although you'll need to add FireWire connectivity to your machine in the form of either a PCI card-based port or via a PCI Express card. A basic FireWire card is very cheap and you get them on Amazon for a few quid.

  4. The DCR-HC52  is a MiniDV camcorder, so you'll need to capture the video via firewire rather than USB - if your PC hasn't already got one you'll need to install a firewire card. They're cheap, easy to install and readily available. You'll also need a firewire cable.

Once everything's connected you can capture and edit the video with Windows Movie Maker (it should already be on your PC) or any other video editor.

  5. Sony calls the connection it has ilink.  It's the same as firewire, which is pretty much the standard for video capture.  It should have a port, and so should your computer.  If  the pooter doesn't, they are easy and fairly inexpensive to install.
