Question:

I have a Sony Handycam DCR-HC40 and when the memory stick is in, it drains the battery and the light flashes?

I have had this for years with NO PROBLEMS. All of a sudden, when the memory stick is in, the little red light flashes underneath the Memory Stick symbol and it drains the battery. If the stick is not in, it works fine, but I cannot use it with the stick in. Do I need a new stick? I hate to spend the money on a new one and find out that is not the problem. Any ideas? Sony, of course, says it must be returned to them for service and that costs an arm and a leg! I refuse to do that. Any thoughts would be appreciated!!

Thanks!

  1. Borrow a ms-duo pro from a friend and test in ur DCR-HC40:

    - If the red light does not flash & everything else is normal, vcam is OK, but there's something wrong w/ ur ms-duo pro (check if ms is still on warrranty, else, these now come at reduced prices)

    - If the red light flashes/ drains battery- there's something wrong w/ vcam- may require some service (in fact, it's better to present the problem to a Sony service rep, rather than risk further damage to ur vcam)

If you're using vcam solely for videos, no need for ms- in fact, miniDV tape gives better quality
