I have a UK driving license but took my exam with an automatic gear car, not a manual. Will I be allowed to?

If you passed your test in an automatic, then you are only allowed to drive automatic cars.

Make sure you request a automatic gearbox car when hiring one in USA. Don't forget the insurance too! :o)

Nearly all cars in the US are automatics anyway - just make sure you ask for an Auto when you rent...

Your licence is still classed as a full licence, it should however have restriction code 78 on it.

As other contributors have said, in the states automatic transmission is standard so there shouldn't be a problem, I would however enquire with the hire company before you go.

You will only be allowed to drive an automatic.

Rule is:-  Auto licence = Auto ONLY

Manual licence = Manual & Auto

Driving licenses are not classified as to which type of transmission is in the vehicle.  Many younger US drivers cannot drive manual transmission automobiles.

Your UK license may not be recognized in the US.  You should see about getting an International Driving Permit.  Remember, in the US, we drive on the "wrong" side.  Most rental companies are international, check with a local office to find out about the license rules.
