Question:

I have a Yamaha 8MSHC outboard motor. how do I tell what type of fuel it uses? gas? mixed oil and gas?

I am getting mixed messages. straight gas, oil/gas mixture with varying mix ratios.... very confusing.

  1. If it has a seperate tank for engine oil,it's 4 stroke, i.e petrol only. If not use a pre mix.Usually 40 or 50 to 1ratio nowadays. Might say the correct ratio on the fuel cap. Or,you could look it up on Yamahas web site.


  2. Depending on the model year, your engine could be either a two stroke or  four stroke.

    An easy way to be certain is to look for an engine oil dipstick on the top of the motor. If it has one, it's a four-stroke and straight gas is the ticket.
