I have a "My Book",

I have a "My Book", Essential Edition, External drive, which a friend set up for me with a lot of information on it. When I plug in the USB and the addaptor (after having my MAC Book booted up), nothing happens. No icons show up indicating that there is any connection. Got any ides?
