  1. drwhocod is correct.

At their current age they should be all feathered out and in being so,their combs/waddles should be a good indication.

If you have chicks that are not feathered out,you don't have 8wk old chicks. . . chicks are generally all feathered out at the age of 6-7 wks. Chicks that still have down are still pretty young.

Combs are the red fleshy stuff on their heads.

Small combs that stand up straight are pullets (female)  Some pullets/hens can have such small combs that they could be considered almost nonexsistent.

Larger combs that stand up straight with more height or droop are cockeriels (male).

Cockeriels will also have red fleshy spots on their jaws that are called waddles.

  2. There are a few key things to look for when determining the s*x of baby chicks/young chickens. First of all, compare the comb to the other chick's. Depending on what kind of bantam, and since they are young, it isn't a very dependable way to tell the s*x yet. You'll see the comb getting bigger and bigger if its a boy, but if it stays small its a hen.

Another thing is the tail feathers. Watch as the tail feathers grow. If the ends of the feathers start to curl or turn, it's most likely a male. If the feathers stay straight, it's most likely a hen. Also as they get older, the males will start to grow spurs on the sides of their legs. Most of it is a wait and see thing. Soon you'll be able to tell for sure which is what.

Good luck and hope you enjoy your chickens! :)

  3. If you know what you are doing, you can check them by opening up the vent but only if you know what you are doing.  I would reccommend that you got someone else to do it if you're not sure.

That said, you would probably only get a 60-70% correct reading anyway.  You are probably better looking for secondary characteristics as already suggested. Then going back to the guy and playing h**l (as he's supposed to be the professional!) if they're not!!

    Good luck  :o)

  4. you'll only be able to definetly tell when they are a bit older .. if i could see thgem i could tell you for sure..

perhaps you could post a picture of them?

as a rule however females are smaller then males ... there plumage is generally duller ... their combs and wattles won't be as red as a male for a while after (if that makes sense to you) also the females do not have spurs

i guess for the moment you'll jus have to wiat until they lay eggs if they are female =]

  5. You will have to wait and see if they get a large comb or not.If it is a rooster it should be starting to get a larger brighter comb than a hen would. The only other way is to wait a little longer and see if they crow or not.

  6. Blood work, or you can wait until they're fully grown. Females look different from the males, but recent studies showed that be examing the pelvic bones, they're able to tell if the bird is a male or a female. Sometimes its not accurate, but that may have been the method used by the breeders.

If the pelvic bones are far apart then the bird is a female because the pelvic must be far enough apart to allow easy passage for the egg. If the pelvic bones are close together, then the bird is a male.

I hope I helped and congrats

  7. look underneath open up and see for yourself

  8. s*x organs in chickens are internal and contained in the cloaca. Most chickens are sexed at one day old - when someone who knows what they are doing can vent the cloaca and see if a tiny bump appears that would indicate the chick is a male. At 8 weeks the birds should be showing some secondary s*x characteristics. Males generally have stronger and thicker legs and more pronounced combs and wattles.

  9. Hi,

As far as I'm aware, vent sexing day old chickens is not possable, the s*x organs are way up into their bodies!

At 8 weeks old , any young males will be growing their combs, these are very red at 8 weeks old. Pullets (young females) will still have very small combs, buff to yellow in colour. Pullets combs do not start to redden until about 16 weeks of age.

  10. i think u have to wait until there adults to see the s*x

  11. With some breeds it is possible to tell by the shape of the feathers on the back, just in front of the tail.  Males will have pointed feathers and females rounded feathers.
