i found it about half an hour later, it was still alive so i immediatly put it in water. I noticed that the top of his head is dull and grayish. Can he be seriosuly injured? Hes swimming alright, but his beautiful blue color at the top of his head is now grey.

  1. i think he bummed his little head during the escape

i think he will be fine fish can be out of the water for two hours

ok if u have someone young you know buy them a barbie but take the plastic and cut a perfect hole for the lid of your fish tank then put smaller holes in it  then tape it on your lid no more adventures for him

i do this for my betta and he has lasted for a long time

  2. Oh dear...bettas can jump out of very small gaps; I once lost a male who lept out of a 1/2 inch gap between his tank edge and lid. Unfortunately, it was too late when I found him; your guy has a pretty good chance of recovering.

The grey could just be color loss from stress. Bettas tend to become paler when they're stressed out, and being out of his tank for so long certainly must have been stressful! Add a little extra aquarium salt to his water - his slime coat was probably damaged during his adventure, and the slime coat helps protect them and prevent infection. The salt will irritate his skin, and help reform his damaged slime coat.

Other than that, just keep an eye on him for the next day or two and make sure things are going back to normal. Bettas are pretty hardy fish, so he should be okay. And get a lid for his tank!

    Good luck!

  3. He may have hurt his head on something during his adventure.

I've had this happen to me twice and neither fish made it.

They come back alive in the water, swim around a while, then die.

It's very sad :(  I hope the best for your little guy.

I've been told by pet stores that most tropical fish medicines are too strong for bettas, but there is one kind of all purpose medicine called Bettafix.  It's like $3 at Petsmart.  Or you could put a tsp or two of epsom salt in with him.  Epsom salt has cured several of my ailing fish.

    Good luck!
