okay, so my mare is 2 years old and she is a quarter horse cross. she is a blue roan...gray all over, with black socks and black tail and mane, but the odd thing is, is that she has a brown head. it does look a bit strange :) so will she ever grow out of it so her head will become just solid gray?

  1. well, try to keep her in the sun alot. my horse really lightened up. BUT if i owned that horse i would be showing her off. Trust me, my eyes would be on her and so would the judges and so would the people watching the show or any one that is your friend. but i bet she is beautiful. but if you can send me a pic  pleasurechamp@yahoo.com

  2. Is she actually blue roan?  Or Grey Or is she REALLY a bay roan?  Bay roan typically looks like blue roans, but have red or brownish looking heads.  A true blue roan will have a black head, not red or brown.  A true blue roan will also look like a light powder blue color over its body and have black legs and head, mane and tail black.  A good example of a Paint horse that is blue roan (and an absolute sweatheart) is Mr Good N Plenty.  His sire is red roan and his mother was black(I think), and he really does look like a light powder or sky blue (I used to work with him years ago).

If you can find out what color her parents were that would help.  If one was bay, and another roan, shes probably a bay or blue roan, but if either parent was grey, she's probably grey and just turning color(grey horses are born another color like red or black or bay, thengradually turn grey or white.)

  3. Blue roans will have masking and mottling on their faces, sometimes it will be brown hairs, some people consider them "blue grulla's". With her being 2, I doubt she will grow out of it. A true blue roan's head will be dark, and not roan out. Leaving out in the sun will not help change the color, or fade the coat. Here two examples:

  4. Um are you sure she is blue roan? Blue roan is totally different from gray. If she is blue roan, no she will not grow out of it. If she is dark gray, she will get dapple gray, and lighter over the years until she is white. I would suggest looking at a horse color chart and deciding what color she really is. Good luck!

  5. I also had a blue Roan once, and he would change colors every season! And he also had a brown head, which I'm sorry to add never grew out and stead the same color.

    But aren't they beautiful!

  6. Blue roans or any roans can look silly.  I work at a farm and there is a blue roan there.  It does have a brown face.  It is a really old, retired horse, and it was there for a long time.  when it first came, it had less white hairs (haha) but it had the brown face.  It's common and I think its gorgeous.  be proud of your horse.  Show it off.  Dont care about what everyone else says (if they say anything) and if it bothers you enough, I guess you could sell it but isnt it rude to cast something out of your life because of how it looks?  also, many winning horses look silly.  its more of the horse than the fur.

  7. No. Roan horses keep the head color
