I have a boat with a trolley motor. The battery is charged but the motor won't work. What could be wrong?

The battery seems to be charged at 65% and 12.4 volt. How can I find out if the motor broke down or if there's something wrong with the battery?

  1. 12.4 volts is a tad low. 12.8v is considered a full charge.

First, I'd clean the battery posts and connectors. If still no-go, have your battery load-tested after a full charge. It's possible (but rare) that a battery will show you over 12v, but available amperage is poor. If the battery tests good, the problem is with your trolling motor, or the cabling.

    Hope this helps. Good luck!

  2. Either bad motor, or bad wiring to the motor.

The switch at the motor could be the culprit. The only way to tell is to chase out the wiring with a tester.

BTW it should be a "trolling" motor.

  3. The trolling motor can burn out and  fail... but can re-wound at an electric repair facility for half the cost of a replacement motor...
