the owner of the place i ride at, orchard end equestrian center, is a big cow and i have to do all the work nearly she only has 2 people working and the rest of us, Me, a 12 year old girl and a 14 y.o girl, a 15 year old and occasionally 2, 16 yearolds and an 18 year old.

but somtimes its only 3 of us me and the 12 and the 14 year olds in the list above

I own my own horse and the 12y.o leases a horse so she cant back talk or anything because she is trying to buy the pony off her but she is being a cow. there are tonnes of other people who ride there all the adults and there kids, they are in the owners "group" and there kids or them dont do any work at all, they just drink tea all day and ride for as long as they like.

all "the girls," have to feed up and all that, we ride until the owner comes down and says "ok u can go up now and Hit the stables", me and my friends want to hit her SOOO badly. and every day we seem to do something wrong and she kinda yells at us, we just cant meet her standards.

she treats me like i am leasing one of her horses and she rules over us.

is this free labour?? what should i do apart from yelling my head off ans swearing her to death

  1. Is there some reason you can't say NO?? If you are all paid up simply say no - you are a boarder.

Are you working off your board or lessons or supervised riding time? If so - stop whineing. There are 100 kids on here that would LOVE that chance.

Ask for a chore list with names and their duties detailed on it. It could also outline riding times.

Nobody gets a free ride at my barn either - and yup, I'll holler at you if you are not holding up your end of the bargain. Or I'll tell you to leave.

I have 11 kids (aged 10 - 18) that share the chores - 5 of them work off board the rest work off lessons.

  2. I'm not sure where do you live, in the USA or UK, but:there are laws to protect children from being exploited.

For example:some countries don't allow kids or teenagers under 14 or 15 or 16yrs to work at all.

So:when you go home, ask some adult or look this up on line, if this woman is actually using child labour at her stable!

    Report her.

I think the 16yr old and 18 yr old OK to work there.I don't know your age.the 12 yr and 14yr old:should not be doing any labour!

  3. When she yells at you, just laugh. And when she gets mad at you for laughing, ask her when payday is. Just be a smartass. She's nothing special, and she knows that. You just have to show her that you know that too and she might stop acting like it (or she'll get worse, in which case you laugh harder.)

  4. Do you do a kids club or whatever? Cos if you do she's aloud to make you do work. Kids Clubs (pony care, etc) includes riding, mucking/skipping out, and general work around the yard. If go voluntarily she can't be reported. Owners NEVER work around the yard! Every 6 yards that I've been to the owners are either up at the house or talking to their friends in the office. DON'T be a smartass it will just get you kicked off the yard.

As for the yelling just ignore her! She's being a yard owner! Every yard has a "Yard Cow"(I would word it differently but I might/would get reported)

  5. Horse stables are among the few places underage kids can work, so I wouldn't be reporting them for child labor violations.  If your boarding agreement does not include you doing any barn work, then you have a legitimate gripe.  However, if your board is ridiculously cheap, without a formal agreement regarding work to be performed, then you should think twice before you do anything.  Complaints often get you kicked out of a place like that.  If, on the other hand, you are paying full, reasonable board, then just tell the owner that you pay for someone else to do that work, and you are not going to do it.

  6. My riding instructor is like this. I have my own on loan somewhere else, but in the holidays, I always offer to help her out a few days in the holidays, but when I'm there, then she just shouts at me for stupid little things, eg. I walked a horse past a head collar on the floor (someone else had put it there and I hadn't even noticed), and she had a go at me because the horse could have spooked at it or tripped over it. (It couldn't have tripped on it because it was rigt up against the wall, and the horse was atleast a metre away, and I think it was more spooked by her shouting/ trowing her arms round than it ws by the headcollar)

  7. I'm having a little trouble with your math. There are 'two people working' and they are you, 12yo, 14yo, 15yo, 2x16yo, and 18yo. That sounds like seven to me.

You don't actually work for her, but you 'have to do all the work.'

If you are just a boarder there, then you don't have to do any work other than pay your board bill. You are a customer. If you don't like the stable where you are, take your business elsewhere. If you want to stay at the property and not work, then remind the owner that you pay for board, and that as such you are not her employee but her customer.
